6th graders are working on their Stitched Culture project. They picked a culture, other than American, and learned a little bit about it. Then they picked a symbol or group of symbols to represent that culture. After drawing their design on cardboard and adding color, students learned how to embroider the areas they wanted to emphasize. Check out some awesome examples below.

For the end of Quarter One, sixth grade SOAR with ART students have put on another fantastic show. Students chose an artist for inspiration, then designed a project all on their own. With a wide range of materials at their disposal students were both creative and innovative. This quarter we have a clay howling wolf, flying 3D objects drawn in perspective, a gem-filled beach scene, and a Cheez-It man on the moon. Check out some of their artwork below.
Hey 6th graders! Our next art project will have you exploring a culture other than your own. In order to pick one that really interests you, you will need to do some exploring to start. Pick one of the links below and learn something about the many cultures around the world. In your artist journal sketch three items or ideas that really stood out!
Culture Quest: http://www.mylearning.org/my-culture-quest/interactive-intro/4-238/ Explore the World: http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/world/ Hey 5th grade Rockets! If you are done with both your Art to Remember project and your Artist Journal cover design, then I've got a challenge for you. We just studied five of the Elements of Design: line, shape, color, value, and texture, but we haven't yet talked about the final frontier: SPACE! Okay, it's not really all about galaxies and stars, but SPACE is an important part of how we make and see ART. Check out the video below. When you're finished, get your journal and write down your favorite artwork you saw in the video. Then draw your own artwork showing space. How will you use SPACE in your ART? SOAR with Art Students are working on their pieces for the Quarter One Art Show taking place the second week in October. They have each chosen an artist that inspires them and then designed a project of their choosing. In addition to their Art Show pieces, some students are also helping out the Riverside Lego League by decorating their giant lego table.
Sixth graders are currently using pattern and emphasis to create a colorful design for their artist journal covers. Students looked at the art of Kehinde Wiley before picking an object to represent their identity. That object then begins to stand out as they surround it with colorful patterns using some of the color schemes from the color wheel. Enough, talk, check out their awesome work so far!
Fifth graders at Riverside are making maps of who they are on their artist journal covers. This week they are looking at how contemporary artists use maps in their work. In order to make their own maps, students are designing four symbols - two memories and two goals, which will then appear on their cover. Check out some work in progress.
In case you haven't figured it out yet, embroidery is kind of my jam. I just finished an embroidery/needle felted piece for my dad, as a belated Father's Day present. What have you made this summer?
This past weekend my good friend and fellow art teacher, Beth, and I drove down to Nashville, TN to became Art Scouts. We got to hang out with a bunch of art teachers, experiment with a ton of new materials, and make some of our very own art to share with our classrooms. Nashville also has a brightly colored replica of Ancient Greece's Parthenon, which you can see below. I can't wait to show you what I made and saw while at camp!
Hey Rockets! This summer I got to travel to the island of Maui for my first family vacation in about twenty years. It was amazing! Maui is one of the Hawaiian islands and we stayed in the town of Kihei. One day we hiked up a mountain into the rainforest and the next we hiked down into a volcano. Check out some of the amazing views below. You know how much I like to travel and see art. This time most of the "art" was nature, and man, was it stunning.
