The first project of the year asks students to design the cover of their new artist journals. Fifth grade students are using LINE and SHAPES to create PATTERN, UNITY, and show their IDENTITY. Sixth graders, on the other hand, are using a personal object as the emphasis of their covers and then will surround the traced object with patterns and color schemes. Great ideas so far, Rockets! Keep it up! You can see my sample 5th grader project below.

Hey Rockets! Welcome back to school. It's great to be back, but I HAVE to tell you about my summer. Last fall I received the Lily Teacher Creativity Fellowship so over the summer I was able to study textile arts in the Mediterranean. Textiles are things like dyed fabrics, weaving, embroidery, and traditional clothing. I went to four countries: Greece, Italy, Croatia, and Morocco and saw a TON of textiles. I learned about the different styles of embroidery and weaving within different regions, and was inspired to create my own work. I've taken a number of my photographs from the trip and started embroidering images and text on the photo paper. Check out some of my favorite photos and new artworks below!
