After their discussion students got back to work on their own street art stencils. In previous classes students chose a positive message they wanted to share, then designed a stencil using simple symbols to communicate that message. Today they are using their stencils to print their images on their class graffiti wall.
For the past few weeks 5th grade students at Riverside have been studying the art of Banksy, Swoon, and Keith Haring. These three artists all use street art to send a message. Students have discussed issues of legality, tools, and the Big Ideas behind the art. This week they are using TodaysMeet.com to address the aesthetic question -- Is ALL graffiti art? Why or why not?

Instrumentalism is a theory of art which states that a good piece of art is one that has a purpose and creates change. This week 5th grade students judged four pieces of art, then chose the best example of an Instrumentalist artwork. Students will soon be sharing their own message through a street art stencil made in class. This week 6th grade students are practicing their interpretation skills using one of Andrea Dezso's life-size tunnel books. Students developed a story based on the image to the left, describing what was going on, then used visual evidence to support their ideas. After they got back to work on their own tunnel books. |
