The girls from scenic art have been busy, busy, busy. They have created the scenery for the upcoming production of The Last Apple Tree. Not only do they paint the background pieces, but they also worked on the tree, the stump, and the picket fence. Some girls got pretty gooey using wallpaper paste to cover the tree while others made their own tissue paper flowers. Come see their hard work and the rest of the crew on March 16 at 6:30 pm!
All of the sixth grade tunnel books are now on display throughout the school. Students did a fantastic job of creating surreal 3D stories that also include ancient civilizations. In addition to turning 2D drawings into a 3D tunnel of images, students also wrote stories to go along with their artwork. Look for some of the best to appear next to their tunnel books.
This quarter fifth graders are studying the art of Courtney Mattison. A self-professed ART-IVIST (artist + activist), Mattison is trying to save the fragile coral reef ecosystem with her art. She combines her love of marine ecology with ceramics in order to build intricate displays of coral reefs. In this example, viewers can witness what happens to a reef as it dies, losing its polyps and source of color and becoming white, lifeless forms. In addition to the extreme beauty and importance of coral reefs, students will also be illustrating the different types of organisms within this ecosystem: producers, consumers, and decomposers. My favorite part of researching this project so far has been my recent discovery of sea slugs, some of the coolest organisms under the sea!
